Employment Act for Line Managers 9 & 10 September 2008, Introduction The Employment Act is the basic labour law governing employment relations in Singapore. It provides the terms and conditions of employment and the rights and obligations of employers and employees. It also instils labour discipline on employers in implementing the minimum employment conditions and statutory benefits provided for all employees. In maintaining good employment relationship with employees, HR practitioners and Non-HR Management personnel, including supervisors, line-managers and executives should have a good understanding and appreciation of the Employment Act. This workshop aims to give participants a sound understanding of the concepts, rationale behind the Employment Act and the practical application of the norms in their establishments. More importantly, it attempts to answer some of the questions managers, executives and supervisors ask themselves, such as: a. "The employee accepted the appointment and commenced work, but he refused to sign the employment contract. Can I terminate his service?" b. "I approved the leave of my employee. A few days later, while on leave the employee tendered his resignation. Can I refuse to consider his resignation? Can I revoke the approved annual leave?" c.
